Why some names may be rejected

Under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007, the Registrar of Companies applies restrictions to:

• Prevent misleading or unethical company names
• Protect public & government-related names
• Avoid confusion with existing registered companies
• Maintain public trust and avoid fraud

Restricted or approval-required terms

Words such as President, State, National, Sri Lanka, Municipal, Co-operative, Chamber of Commerce may require special approval or may not be allowed.

Words ignored during similarity checks

Certain words and differences do not make a name unique. For example: “Ltd, Pvt, The, PLC, and/&” as well as punctuation or spacing.

Tips to choose a valid name

• Keep it unique & descriptive of your business
• Avoid generic names like “Global Traders”
• Always end with (PVT) LTD or (PRIVATE) LIMITED
• Consider future trademark registration
